An Introduction to the NAATI License

The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters, or NAATI for short, is an internationally recognised licensing system that must be applied for and earned by those that wish to pursue a professional career in translating and interpreting. Although not an obligation, this license is widely sought after within dozens of professional fields, including in the medical industry.

Anyone that possesses a NAATI license and is  a NAATI certified translator will have had to have undertaken extensive training, education and testing in the field of translation and only those deemed to be efficient in their chosen languages will go on to receive the illustrious qualification. It can be possible to hire freelance translators for minor projects and requirements, but as there is no governing policy to dictate the quality that these individuals provide; quality results aren’t guaranteed.

Becoming an accredited translator means that the individual will be licensed and recognised as an expert in their field. Those that pursue these careers can often go on to provide world-class interpretation services for governmental, medical and official purposes – as well as written and verbal translation solutions to businesses in need.

What is NAATI?

This organisation is the only internationally recognised authority within Australia for language, translation and interpretation. Although the authority has been around for just over a decade, in 2011 it underwent extensive changes to ensure that the quality of its accredited license holders was as high as possible.

As a result, the standards of testing and certification increased – and after undertaking extensive research (performed by Professor Sandra Hale), a list of improvements and modifications were made to the testing policies. As of 2017, these tests are now deemed to be of the highest imaginable standard; which roughly translates to the ability to ensure that anyone that is able to obtain accreditation can provide the highest quality of language interpretation and translation services on a professional basis.

Anyone can undertake a course for accreditation, but only a handful of applicants will go on to become successfully licensed. Those that are able to achieve this status are in great demand within a range of sectors, mainly due to the fact that they will be the most extensively qualified to perform a particular translation role.

Any business hoping to translate and interpret in a professional environment may need to hire a fully accredited license holder – especially if they work within the medical and governmental fields. As mentioned above this is no longer an obligation, but it is highly recommended by authoritative bodies within the country of Australia.
